How the Age Calculator Works

This age calculator determines your exact age by counting the full years, months, and remaining days between your date of birth and a target date (today by default). The algorithm works in three steps. First, it subtracts the birth year from the current year to get a preliminary year count. Second, it compares the birth month and day to the current month and day: if the current date has not yet reached the birth month and day, it subtracts one year and adds the remaining months. Third, it counts leftover days by looking at how many days were in the previous month to handle months of varying lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days).

Leap years receive special treatment. A leap year occurs every four years, except for years divisible by 100 unless also divisible by 400. This means 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. The calculator counts every February 29 that falls within your lifetime when computing total days lived. If you were born on February 29, the calculator treats March 1 as your birthday anniversary in non-leap years, so your age in years still increments annually even though your calendar birthday only appears every four years.

Beyond the years-months-days breakdown, several additional metrics appear automatically. Total days lived gives you a single number representing every day from birth to the target date, useful for milestone celebrations like your 10,000th or 20,000th day alive. Total weeks and total months offer alternative perspectives on elapsed time. The day of the week you were born answers a common curiosity question and connects to the traditional nursery rhyme ("Monday's child is fair of face..."). The next birthday countdown shows how many days remain until your next birthday, which is helpful for party planning or personal reflection.

Chronological age is the straightforward count of time since birth measured in years, months, and days using the Gregorian calendar.
