Age Calculator
Quick Answer
Your exact age is the difference between today's date and your date of birth, expressed as completed years, months, and days. This tool uses the Gregorian calendar (ISO 8601 date standard) to compute totals in years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

How the Age Calculator Works
This age calculator determines your exact age by counting the full years, months, and remaining days between your date of birth and a target date (today by default). The algorithm works in three steps. First, it subtracts the birth year from the current year to get a preliminary year count. Second, it compares the birth month and day to the current month and day: if the current date has not yet reached the birth month and day, it subtracts one year and adds the remaining months. Third, it counts leftover days by looking at how many days were in the previous month to handle months of varying lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days).
Leap years receive special treatment. A leap year occurs every four years, except for years divisible by 100 unless also divisible by 400. This means 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. The calculator counts every February 29 that falls within your lifetime when computing total days lived. If you were born on February 29, the calculator treats March 1 as your birthday anniversary in non-leap years, so your age in years still increments annually even though your calendar birthday only appears every four years.
Beyond the years-months-days breakdown, several additional metrics appear automatically. Total days lived gives you a single number representing every day from birth to the target date, useful for milestone celebrations like your 10,000th or 20,000th day alive. Total weeks and total months offer alternative perspectives on elapsed time. The day of the week you were born answers a common curiosity question and connects to the traditional nursery rhyme ("Monday's child is fair of face..."). The next birthday countdown shows how many days remain until your next birthday, which is helpful for party planning or personal reflection.
The optional "Age on Specific Date" field lets you calculate your age at any past or future date. Enter a historical date to find out how old you were when a major event happened, or enter a future date to determine your age at a planned milestone such as a wedding, graduation, or retirement.
Key Concepts
Chronological age is the straightforward count of time since birth measured in years, months, and days using the Gregorian calendar. This is the age on your government-issued ID and the basis for virtually all legal age thresholds. It is objective, universally understood, and the type of age this calculator computes.
Biological age (sometimes called physiological age) reflects how well your body is functioning compared to population averages at various chronological ages. Two 50-year-olds may have very different biological ages depending on genetics, diet, exercise habits, sleep quality, and stress levels. Biological age is estimated through biomarkers such as telomere length, DNA methylation patterns, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and grip strength. While chronological age only moves in one direction, biological age can potentially be slowed or even reversed through lifestyle changes.
Calendar systems also affect how age is counted. The Gregorian calendar, adopted internationally, is the standard used here. However, the Korean age system traditionally counted everyone as 1 at birth with an additional year added each Lunar New Year (South Korea officially switched to the international system in June 2023). The Chinese lunar calendar and Islamic Hijri calendar produce different date counts because they follow lunar rather than solar cycles. The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar, adding a leap month periodically. If you need age in a non-Gregorian system, you would need a specialized converter.
Age Milestones by Country
Different countries set different legal thresholds for major life events. The table below shows common age milestones across several countries. Use the age calculator to check whether you or someone else has reached a specific threshold.
| Milestone | United States | United Kingdom | India | Australia | Canada |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Voting Age | 18 | 18 | 18 | 18 | 18 |
| Drinking Age | 21 | 18 | 21 (most states) | 18 | 18-19 (by province) |
| Driving Age | 16 (most states) | 17 | 18 | 16-17 (by state) | 16 (most provinces) |
| Age of Majority | 18 | 18 | 18 | 18 | 18-19 (by province) |
| Retirement Age (State Pension) | 62-67 (Social Security) | 66-68 (State Pension) | 58-60 (Govt employees) | 67 (Age Pension) | 65 (OAS) |
| Medicare / Public Health Eligibility | 65 | All ages (NHS) | All ages (Govt schemes) | All ages (Medicare) | All ages (Provincial) |
Practical Uses for an Age Calculator
Eligibility checks. Many programs, benefits, and legal rights are gated by age. Use the calculator to verify whether you qualify for Social Security benefits, Medicare enrollment, senior discounts, youth sports leagues, or age-restricted purchases. Enter a future date in the second field to find out exactly when you will reach a specific age threshold.
Date math for events. Planning a milestone birthday party? Enter the date of the event and your birth date to see your exact age on that day. This is useful for "over the hill" parties at 40 or 50, quinceañera celebrations at 15, or Sweet Sixteen parties. You can also use the Date Difference Calculator for more general date arithmetic.
Legal and administrative documents. Passport applications, visa forms, insurance quotes, and court filings often require your exact age on a specific date. Rather than counting manually, enter both dates and get an instant, error-free answer. HR departments use age calculations for retirement eligibility, benefits enrollment windows, and mandatory retirement compliance.
Health and development tracking. Pediatricians track developmental milestones by exact age in months and days. Parents can enter their child's birth date to see the precise age in months, which is important for vaccination schedules, growth chart percentile tracking, and school enrollment cutoff dates. For adults, knowing your exact age helps with age-adjusted health screening recommendations such as when to begin colonoscopy screenings (typically at age 45) or mammograms.
Fun Facts About Age and Time
- 1 billion seconds is approximately 31 years and 8 months. Most people pass their billionth second alive in their early thirties without realizing it.
- 10,000 days old occurs at about age 27 years and 5 months. Some people throw "10K day" parties to mark the occasion.
- The oldest verified person ever was Jeanne Calment of France, who lived to 122 years and 164 days (1875-1997).
- On Mars, a year is 687 Earth days. If you are 30 Earth years old, you would be roughly 15.9 Martian years old.
- A person born on February 29 (a "leapling") technically has a birthday only once every four years. By age 80, they will have celebrated only 20 actual birthdays on their birth date.
- The average human lifespan worldwide is about 73 years (as of 2023 WHO data), which translates to roughly 26,645 days, 3,806 weeks, or about 2.3 billion heartbeats.
- In dog years, the old rule of multiplying by 7 is a myth. Researchers suggest a more accurate formula based on DNA methylation: 16 ln(dog age) + 31, meaning a 2-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 42-year-old human.
