Estimating Cryptocurrency Mining Profitability

Cryptocurrency mining profitability depends on four primary factors: your hardware's hash rate (computational power), the network's mining difficulty, the current block reward, and your electricity cost. This calculator combines these inputs to estimate daily, monthly, and annual mining revenue, subtracts electricity costs, and shows your net profit or loss. As mining difficulty adjusts dynamically based on total network hash power, profitability can change significantly from month to month, making regular recalculation essential.

Hash rate measures how many cryptographic calculations your mining hardware performs per second. For Bitcoin (SHA-256), modern ASIC miners operate in the terahash (TH/s) range, while Ethereum-style (Ethash) GPU miners operate in megahash (MH/s). The network difficulty determines how many hashes, on average, must be computed to find a valid block. When more miners join the network, difficulty increases, reducing each individual miner's share of block rewards. The calculator divides your hash rate by the network hash rate and multiplies by the total block rewards issued per day to estimate your share of mining revenue.

Electricity cost is typically the largest ongoing expense in mining operations. At $0.10 per kWh, a 3,000-watt ASIC miner costs approximately $7.20 per day to run, or $216 per month. Profitable mining generally requires electricity rates below $0.06 to $0.08 per kWh for Bitcoin, which is why large mining operations locate near cheap hydroelectric or surplus energy sources. Beyond electricity, factor in hardware depreciation (ASIC miners typically have a productive life of 2 to 4 years), cooling costs, pool fees (usually 1-2%), and the opportunity cost of the capital invested in equipment.
