How Engine Displacement Is Calculated
Engine displacement measures the total volume swept by all pistons in an engine. It is calculated using the formula: Displacement = (pi/4) x Bore^2 x Stroke x Number of Cylinders. The bore is the diameter of each cylinder, and the stroke is how far the piston travels up and down.
Displacement is commonly expressed in cubic centimeters (cc), liters, or cubic inches. A 2000cc engine is the same as a 2.0L engine. American muscle cars traditionally use cubic inches (a 350 ci Chevy small block is about 5.7 liters). To convert cc to cubic inches, divide by 16.387.
Larger displacement generally means more power potential but also more fuel consumption. Modern turbocharging allows smaller displacement engines to produce power comparable to larger naturally aspirated engines, which is why many manufacturers have downsized their engines.
