Understanding Frame Rates and Slow Motion

Frame rate is the number of images per second. Cinema uses 24 fps, PAL 25 fps, NTSC 29.97 fps. Slow motion is shooting faster than playback.

The slow motion factor = source fps / playback fps. A 10-second clip at 60 fps played at 24 fps becomes 25 seconds of 2.5x slow motion.

Frame interval is the time between frames. At 24 fps each frame is 41.67 ms; at 60 fps, 16.67 ms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What frame rate to shoot in?

24 fps for cinematic, 30 fps for online/TV, 60 fps for smooth motion, 120+ fps for slow motion.

How does fps affect file size?

Doubling fps roughly doubles raw data. With compression, the increase is typically 40-70%.

What is 23.976 fps?

NTSC-compatible version of 24 fps, with 0.1% speed difference for broadcast compatibility.

Can I convert 30fps to 24fps?

Yes, but it requires frame blending or optical flow interpolation for smooth results.
