New Zealand GST Explained
New Zealand has a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 15%, which applies to most goods and services sold in the country. It was introduced in 1986 at 10% and increased to 12.5% in 1989 and 15% in 2010.
To add GST: multiply the amount by 1.15. To find the GST in a GST-inclusive price: divide by 1.15 to get the pre-GST amount, then subtract. For example, an item priced at $115 including GST has $15 of GST and a pre-GST price of $100.
GST-registered businesses (turnover above $60,000) must charge GST on taxable supplies and can claim GST credits on business purchases. Some items are GST-exempt, including financial services, donated goods, and residential rent.
