Gutter Sizing by Roof Area and Rainfall Intensity

Properly sized gutters protect your foundation, siding, and landscaping from water damage by channeling rainwater away from your home. The two most common residential gutter profiles are K-style and half-round. K-style gutters in 5-inch width handle most homes with up to about 5,520 square feet of adjusted drainage area, while 6-inch K-style gutters are necessary for larger roofs or regions with intense rainfall. Half-round gutters are less common but offer a traditional aesthetic and are easier to clean.

This calculator determines your adjusted drainage area by multiplying your roof footprint by a pitch factor and your local maximum rainfall intensity. Steeper roofs collect more wind-driven rain and have a larger effective catchment area, so a 9/12 pitch receives a 1.2 multiplier compared to 1.0 for flat roofs. Rainfall intensity varies significantly by region -- coastal areas of the Southeast may see 6 to 8 inches per hour during storms, while drier inland regions might only experience 2 to 3 inches per hour at peak.

Downspout placement is equally important: plan one downspout for every 20 to 30 linear feet of gutter run, or roughly one per 600 square feet of roof area. Downspouts should be placed at low points and corners, and should discharge water at least 4 to 6 feet from the foundation. When in doubt, oversize your gutters rather than undersize -- the cost difference between 5-inch and 6-inch systems is modest, but overflow from undersized gutters can cause thousands of dollars in foundation and basement damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size gutters do I need?

5-inch K-style gutters handle most residential roofs up to about 5,520 sq ft of adjusted drainage area. 6-inch gutters are needed for larger roofs or high-rainfall areas.

How many downspouts do I need?

One downspout per 20-30 linear feet of gutter, or approximately one per 600 sq ft of roof area. Place downspouts at corners and ends of gutter runs.

What about gutter guards?

Gutter guards reduce debris cleaning but are not maintenance-free. Micro-mesh guards work best. Consider them if you have many trees nearby. They add cost but reduce long-term maintenance.
