How the Pace Calculator Works
This pace calculator helps runners, walkers, and cyclists determine any one of three variables when given the other two: pace, time, or distance. Whether you are training for your first 5K or aiming for a marathon personal record, this tool makes it easy to plan your race strategy and set realistic goals.
In Find Pace mode, enter your distance and time to calculate your pace per mile or kilometer. In Find Time mode, enter your distance and target pace to see how long it will take to finish. In Find Distance mode, enter your time and pace to find out how far you can go. The calculator also shows your speed in miles or kilometers per hour.
The race preset buttons let you quickly set common race distances: 5K (3.1 miles), 10K (6.2 miles), Half Marathon (13.1 miles), and Marathon (26.2 miles). Use the unit toggle to switch between miles and kilometers. For race planning, consider that most runners start slightly faster than their average pace and slow down in the second half. Adding 5-10 seconds per mile to your training pace is a common strategy for even pacing. Consistent training with a mix of easy runs, speed work, and long runs is the best way to improve your pace over time.
Formula
Pace = Time / Distance
Where:
- Pace = time per unit distance (e.g., min/mile or min/km)
- Time = total elapsed time (hours, minutes, seconds)
- Distance = total distance covered (miles or kilometers)
Example Calculation
Scenario: A runner completes a 10K (6.2 miles) in 52 minutes
- Step 1: Convert time to minutes: 52 min
- Step 2: Pace = 52 min / 6.2 miles = 8:23 per mile
- Step 3: Pace in metric = 52 min / 10 km = 5:12 per km
- Result: 8:23/mile or 5:12/km pace
