Pallet Calculator

How It Works

Efficient pallet loading maximizes shipping capacity and reduces per-unit freight costs. This calculator determines how many boxes fit on a standard pallet by testing both orientations and choosing the one that fits more boxes per layer.

The standard North American pallet is 48 x 40 inches (GMA pallet). The maximum height depends on your carrier requirements and warehouse racking — typically 48-60 inches of product height above the pallet deck. Total height including the pallet should not exceed 72 inches for most carriers.

For best results, design your box dimensions to divide evenly into pallet dimensions. Small changes in box size can dramatically affect pallet utilization. For example, changing a box from 13 to 12 inches can add an entire column of boxes per layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standard pallet size?

The most common pallet in North America is the GMA pallet at 48 x 40 inches. European pallets (EUR pallets) are 1200 x 800mm (47.2 x 31.5 inches). Other common sizes include 42x42 and 48x48 inches.

What is the maximum weight for a pallet?

Standard GMA pallets support up to 2,500 lbs. However, carrier limits are typically 2,000-2,500 lbs per pallet for LTL shipping. Forklift capacity and floor load limits may also apply.

How high can I stack boxes on a pallet?

Most carriers allow a total height of 72 inches (including the 6-inch pallet). This means about 60-66 inches of product. Warehouse racking may have different height limits. Always check with your carrier.

How can I improve pallet utilization?

Design box dimensions to divide evenly into 48x40. Use alternating layer patterns for stability. Consider mixing box sizes if applicable. Aim for 85%+ surface utilization per layer.
