Understanding Zakat on Gold
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and represents an obligatory form of charitable giving for Muslims who meet certain wealth thresholds. Gold, being a form of stored wealth, is subject to Zakat when a Muslim's gold holdings reach or exceed the Nisab — the minimum threshold set at 85 grams of pure (24 karat) gold. The Zakat rate on gold is 2.5% of the total market value, payable once every lunar year (Hijri year).
How the Calculation Works
To determine if Zakat is due, first convert your gold holdings to grams and then calculate the pure gold equivalent based on karat purity. For instance, 22 karat gold is 91.67% pure, so 100 grams of 22k gold equals 91.67 grams of pure gold. If this pure gold equivalent meets or exceeds 85 grams, the Nisab threshold is met, and Zakat becomes obligatory. The amount due is 2.5% of the total market value of your gold holdings at the current gold price.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter the total weight of your gold and select the appropriate unit — grams, tolas, or troy ounces. Choose the karat of your gold to determine purity, and enter the current gold price per gram. The calculator will instantly display your total gold weight in grams, the pure gold equivalent, the approximate market value, whether the Nisab is met, and the exact Zakat amount due. The doughnut chart provides a visual breakdown of the Zakat portion versus the remaining value, helping you understand your obligation at a glance.
Different units of measurement are common across regions — tolas are widely used in South Asia, while troy ounces are standard in Western gold markets. This calculator handles all conversions automatically, so you can input your gold weight in whichever unit is most convenient. Always verify the current gold price before making your final Zakat calculation, as gold prices fluctuate daily.
