Calculating Concrete Volume for Stairs

Building concrete stairs requires precise calculations for riser height, tread depth, and total concrete volume. Building codes typically require residential stair risers between 4 and 7-3/4 inches tall, with treads at least 10 inches deep. The riser-tread relationship should follow the comfort formula: 2 x riser + tread = 24 to 25 inches. This means a 7-inch riser pairs with a 10 to 11-inch tread, which most people find comfortable to climb. This calculator computes the concrete volume needed based on your stair dimensions, number of steps, and stair width.

The concrete volume for stairs is calculated by treating each step as a rectangular prism and summing the volumes. Each step sits on top of a progressively taller base, so the bottom step contains the most concrete. The formula accounts for the stair width, the number of treads and risers, and any landing platform at the top. A typical 4-step entrance staircase that is 4 feet wide requires approximately 0.5 to 0.8 cubic yards of concrete. Always order 10% more than calculated to account for form irregularities, spillage, and the concrete that remains in the chute.

Concrete for stairs should be a minimum 3,500 psi mix with 3/4-inch aggregate for adequate strength and workability. In freeze-thaw climates, use air-entrained concrete with 5-7% air content to prevent surface spalling. Reinforce stairs with #4 rebar spaced 12 inches on center in both directions, with bars extending into the foundation and landing. Pour stairs from the bottom up, vibrating each step to eliminate voids, and finish treads with a broom texture for slip resistance. Allow at least 7 days of moist curing before removing forms, and do not apply deicing salt during the first winter.
