How to Calculate Square Footage
Knowing the square footage of a room or property is essential for real estate transactions, home improvement projects, flooring, painting, and many other purposes. This calculator supports four common room shapes and lets you add multiple rooms to get an accurate total area for your entire space.
Formulas for Each Shape
For a rectangle, the area is simply length multiplied by width. An L-shaped room is calculated as two separate rectangles added together. For a triangle, the area is one-half times the base times the height. A circle uses the formula pi times the radius squared. All results are displayed in both square feet and square meters.
Tips for Accurate Measurements
Always measure at floor level and record dimensions in consistent units. For irregular rooms, break the space into simple shapes, measure each section, and add them together. When measuring for flooring or paint, add a waste factor of 5-10% to account for cuts and errors. Round up when purchasing materials.
