How to Calculate Tiles for a Room
Whether you are tiling a kitchen floor, a bathroom wall, or an entire living area, knowing exactly how many tiles to buy is essential. Buying too few means delays and potential color batch differences, while buying too many wastes money. This calculator takes the guesswork out of your tile project.
The Calculation
First, the room area is calculated by multiplying length by width. Each tile's area is determined from its dimensions in inches, converted to square feet. The number of tiles is the room area divided by the tile area, rounded up. A waste factor is then added to account for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching.
Choosing the Right Waste Factor
Use 10% waste for simple straight-lay patterns in rectangular rooms. For diagonal installations, increase to 15%. Complex patterns like herringbone or rooms with many angles and obstacles may need 20% or more. If your tile is expensive or hard to source, buy extra for future repairs.
Common tile sizes include 12x12, 18x18, and 24x24 inches. Larger tiles cover more area with fewer grout lines but require a flatter subfloor and may produce more waste in small or oddly shaped rooms. The custom size option lets you calculate for any tile dimension.
