How to Calculate Cumulative GPA

Cumulative GPA combines all semesters: New GPA = (old GPA × old credits + new GPA × new credits) / total credits. This weighted average gives proportional importance to each semester based on its credit load.

As you accumulate more credits, each new semester has less impact on your cumulative GPA. A strong semester early in college has more effect than the same GPA later. This means it gets harder to raise (or lower) your GPA as you progress.

This calculator helps you plan: enter hypothetical semester grades to see how they'd affect your cumulative GPA. It's useful for setting goals, determining if Dean's List is achievable, or checking graduate school admission requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is cumulative GPA calculated?

Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous credits + current GPA × current credits) / total credits. It's a credit-weighted average.

Why is it hard to raise my GPA?

With more credits, each semester has less weight. With 90 credits at 3.0, even a perfect 4.0 semester of 15 credits only raises you to 3.14.

What GPA do I need for grad school?

Most programs require 3.0+. Competitive programs often expect 3.5+. Requirements vary by field and institution.

Do transfer credits affect GPA?

Usually not. Most schools accept transfer credits but calculate GPA only from courses taken at their institution.
