How Weighted Grades Work

Weighted grades account for the different importance of assignment categories. Each category (homework, tests, projects) has a weight percentage, and the final grade is calculated as: Σ(weight × grade) / Σ(weights). This ensures exams worth 40% affect your grade more than homework worth 20%.

This calculator supports three categories, which covers most course structures. Enter the weight and current average for each category. The total weight should add up to 100%, but the calculator will normalize if it doesn't.

To find what you need on a final exam, you can adjust the exam category grade until your weighted average reaches your target. Many students use this to determine the minimum exam score needed to achieve a desired course grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do weighted grades work?

Each category has a weight (e.g., exams 40%, homework 30%, projects 30%). Your grade is: Σ(weight × grade) / Σ(weights).

Do weights need to add up to 100%?

Ideally yes. If they don't, this calculator normalizes by dividing by the total weight. Most syllabi use weights that sum to 100%.

What grade do I need on the final?

Needed final grade = (desired overall - current weighted sum) / final exam weight. Use this calculator by adjusting the exam grade to find the target.

What is a 4.0 GPA equivalent?

A 4.0 = A (93-100%). B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0.
