The popular notion that one dog year equals seven human years is a gross oversimplification. In reality, dogs age at dramatically different rates depending on their breed size and where they are in their lifespan. Medium breeds such as Beagles and Bulldogs follow a moderate curve with life expectancies of 10-13 years. Large breeds like Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds age faster after maturity, typically living 9-12 years. Giant breeds including Great Danes and Mastiffs have the shortest lifespans at just 7-10 years.
