How Dovetail Joint Layout Works

The Dovetail Spacing Formula

The calculator divides the board width into proportional units based on the pin-to-tail ratio:

Total units = Number of Tails + (Number of Tails - 1) x Pin Ratio + Pin Ratio

Tail Width = Board Width / Total Units

Pin Width = Tail Width x Pin Ratio

The dovetail angle determines the slope of the tail sides. The angle is expressed as a ratio: 1:4 equals 14 degrees, 1:5 equals 11.3 degrees, and 1:6 equals 9.5 degrees.
