How to Calculate Your GPA

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardized measure of academic performance used by colleges and universities. It converts letter grades into a numerical scale, typically from 0.0 to 4.0, and weights them by the number of credit hours each course carries. A higher credit course has more impact on your GPA than a lower credit one.

The calculation is straightforward: for each course, multiply its grade points by its credits to get quality points. Sum all quality points, then divide by total credits. For example, if you earn an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course: quality points = (4.0 × 3) + (3.3 × 4) = 12.0 + 13.2 = 25.2. Total credits = 7. GPA = 25.2 / 7 = 3.60.

To calculate your cumulative GPA across multiple semesters, enter your prior cumulative GPA and prior total credits in the optional fields. The calculator combines your previous academic record with your current semester courses. This is particularly useful for tracking how this semester will affect your overall standing, or for determining what grades you need to reach a target GPA. Most colleges use the 4.0 scale shown here, though some institutions use different scales or include plus/minus modifiers differently.
