How Week Counting Works

A week is a seven-day period that does not divide the Gregorian calendar year evenly. 365 days divided by 7 equals 52 weeks with a remainder of 1 day, and 366 days divided by 7 equals 52 weeks with a remainder of 2 days. The extra day or two is why every new year shifts by one weekday (two after a leap year) — if January 1, 2026, is a Thursday, January 1, 2027, will be a Friday. This simple arithmetic is described in the ISO 8601 standard maintained by the International Organization for Standardization.

There are two common ways to count weeks. The decimal method simply divides days by seven: 52.1429 weeks for a common year, 52.2857 for a leap year. The Weeks-in-a-Year Formula

The basic formula is: weeks in a year = days in year divided by 7. For a common year this is 365 ÷ 7 = 52.142857 weeks, and for a leap year 366 ÷ 7 = 52.285714 weeks. To decide whether year Y is a leap year, apply the Gregorian rule: Y is a leap year if Y is divisible by 4 except for century years (divisible by 100) that are not also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, 1900 was not, and 2028 is.
