Understanding Your Investment Growth

This investment calculator helps you project the future value of your portfolio by combining an initial lump sum with regular monthly additions and compound growth. What sets it apart is the optional inflation adjustment, which shows you the real purchasing power of your future wealth rather than just the nominal dollar amount.

The nominal future value is calculated using monthly compounding: your initial investment grows at FV = P(1 + r/12)12t, and each monthly addition compounds from its deposit date. The real (inflation-adjusted) value then discounts the nominal result by the cumulative effect of inflation over the same period: Real FV = Nominal FV / (1 + i)t, where i is the annual inflation rate.

The bar chart below compares nominal and real values year by year, making it easy to see how inflation gradually widens the gap between what your portfolio is worth on paper and what it can actually buy. Historical US inflation has averaged about 3% per year, though it can fluctuate significantly. When planning for long-term goals such as retirement, a house purchase, or education funding, accounting for inflation is essential to avoid overestimating your future purchasing power. Use this calculator to experiment with different return rates, contribution levels, and inflation assumptions to build a realistic investment plan.

Formula

FV = P(1 + r/n)nt + PMT × [((1 + r/n)nt − 1) / (r/n)]

Example Calculation

Scenario: $15,000 initial investment with $300/month contributions at 8% return for 20 years

  • Step 1: Monthly rate = 8% ÷ 12 = 0.006667, periods = 240
  • Step 2: Lump sum growth = $15,000 × (1.006667)240 = $73,426
  • Step 3: Contribution growth = $300 × [((1.006667)240 − 1) / 0.006667] = $176,543
  • Result: Total value = $249,969 | Total contributed = $87,000 | Investment gain = $162,969
