How to Calculate Swimming Pace

Swimming pace is expressed as time per 100 meters (or 100 yards). To calculate: pace = (total time in seconds / distance) × 100. A swimmer completing 1500m in 25:30 has a pace of 1:42 per 100m.

Pool swimming uses two measurement systems: meters (Olympic/long course pools are 50m, short course 25m) and yards (US college/high school pools are 25 yards). Times in yards are generally faster because yards are shorter. Conversion factor: 1 meter ≈ 1.094 yards.

Use this calculator to plan interval training (set target paces), track improvement over time, or estimate race times at different distances. Consistent pacing is key to efficient swimming — going out too fast leads to significant slowdown in longer events.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good swimming pace?

Recreational: 2:30-3:00/100m. Intermediate: 1:45-2:15/100m. Competitive: 1:10-1:30/100m. Elite: under 1:00/100m.

How do I convert meters to yards pace?

Divide your meters pace by 1.094 to get an approximate yards pace. Yard pools are shorter, so yard times are naturally faster.

What is CSS in swimming?

Critical Swim Speed — your threshold pace sustainable for long distances. Calculated from 400m and 200m time trials. Great for training zones.

How do I get faster at swimming?

Focus on technique (especially streamlining and catch), do interval training at race pace, and build endurance with longer sets.
