Understanding Track Pacing
Even pacing (running each lap at the same speed) is generally the most efficient strategy for middle and long distance track events. This calculator divides your goal time evenly across laps to give you target splits for each 400m lap.
A standard outdoor track is 400 meters. Common events: 800m (2 laps), 1500m (3.75 laps), mile/1600m (4 laps), 3200m (8 laps), 5000m (12.5 laps), and 10000m (25 laps). Indoor tracks are typically 200m.
In practice, most successful racers run a slight negative split (second half faster than first). Starting 1-2 seconds per lap slower than goal pace and finishing faster is more sustainable than going out too fast and fading.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a negative split?
A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first half. Most distance running world records have been set with negative splits or very even pacing.
How do I find my race pace?
Run time trials at shorter distances and use pace calculators to project your ability at longer distances. A common rule: double your 800m time and add 10-15 seconds to estimate your 1600m potential.
What is a good mile time?
For men: sub-5:00 is competitive high school, sub-4:30 is elite high school, sub-4:00 is world-class. For women: sub-6:00 is competitive, sub-5:00 is elite, sub-4:20 is world-class.
