When adding or subtracting time, the calculator converts both durations to total seconds, performs the arithmetic, then converts back to a human-readable format. If a subtraction results in a negative value, the result is displayed with a minus sign. The decimal hours converter is particularly useful for people who track time in one format but need to report in another. Many payroll and billing systems use decimal hours (where 30 minutes equals 0.5 hours) rather than the clock format most people think in. To convert decimal hours to h:m:s, the whole number becomes hours, the fractional part is multiplied by 60 to get minutes, and any remaining fraction is multiplied by 60 again for seconds. Going the other direction, divide minutes by 60 and seconds by 3600, then add to the hours.
