How to Calculate Baseboard Needs

Baseboard is installed along the bottom of walls where they meet the floor. To calculate how much you need, measure the perimeter of each room and subtract doorway openings. Add 10% for waste from cuts and mistakes.

Baseboard comes in 8, 12, and 16-foot lengths. Longer pieces mean fewer joints but are harder to handle. Plan cuts to minimize waste by matching piece lengths to wall sections. Inside corners use cope joints; outside corners use miter joints.

Baseboard costs $1-5 per linear foot for materials (MDF to solid hardwood). Professional installation adds $2-4 per linear foot. A standard room requires 45-55 linear feet of baseboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate room perimeter?

Add the length of all walls: for a 14x12 room, perimeter = 14+14+12+12 = 52 feet. Subtract each doorway width (typically 3 feet). For 2 doors: 52 - 6 = 46 linear feet needed.

What height baseboard should I use?

Standard baseboards are 3-3.5 inches tall. Rooms with 8-foot ceilings look best with 3-5 inch baseboards. Rooms with 9-10 foot ceilings can use 5-7 inch or taller baseboards for proper proportion.

Do I need shoe molding with baseboard?

Shoe molding (quarter round) covers gaps between baseboard and uneven floors. It is optional but recommended for hardwood, laminate, and tile floors where small gaps are common. It is not needed on carpet.
