How to Calculate Electricity Costs
Understanding your electricity consumption helps you manage utility bills and identify opportunities to save energy. This calculator lets you add multiple appliances and see exactly how much each one costs to run on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. Simply enter the wattage, hours of use per day, and your local electricity rate.
The Formula
Energy usage is calculated as Watts x Hours / 1000 = kWh. One kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the standard billing unit for electricity. To find the cost, multiply kWh by your electricity rate. For example, a 100-watt light bulb running 10 hours per day uses 1 kWh daily. At $0.16/kWh, that costs $0.16 per day or about $4.80 per month.
Tips for Reducing Electricity Costs
Switch to LED bulbs (use 75% less energy than incandescent), unplug devices when not in use to eliminate phantom loads, use a programmable thermostat, and consider Energy Star rated appliances. Running large appliances during off-peak hours can also save money if your utility offers time-of-use pricing.
The bar chart below the results shows a visual comparison of monthly costs across all your appliances, making it easy to spot which devices are the biggest contributors to your electricity bill. Use this information to prioritize energy-saving upgrades where they will have the greatest impact.
